Pantone Marsala Quilt Challenge

Ahhh, Marsala!!

The deadline is now coming fast so I’ve put this project on the top of my to do/must do NOW list.   This challenge is being hosted by Anne and her team at Play Crafts and Adrianne on the Windy Side.

The color–Marsala–is quite a challenging one.  I dug into my stash and found this great print with Marsala in it–one reason why I hadn’t used this print in any projects so far.

The print is Geneva Collection White Floral S J3235 by Hoffman Fabrics.  Out of print but you can occasionally find it on Etsy.com although I think I bought this at Joann’s.

Here is my original fabric pull:

I had a tough time deciding on a design–and whether I wanted to go lap size or mini with this project.

Here’s the fabric pile I’m working with this week….the lighter team is in there somewhere…..

I added a brighter chartreuse, and decided that I wanted a solid black somewhere in it.

Then, finally, I decided to base the design on 3-1/2 inch half square triangles and 3-1/2 inch squares in an alternate grid layout.

I started making improvisational pieced blocks and half square triangle blocks. I have a lot more to make.

I am thinking I will define some of the grid sections with thin black strips–either pieced strips about 1/2 inch finished size OR with a very thin flange that will almost look like piping.  The flange will keep the lines straight but the pieced strips will interrupt the straight lines.

Here are the two versions of the black lines on my design wall.   As I look at this, I think I’ll make some larger blocks in solids and improvisational  blocks—maybe 6-1/2 inch square— to also break up the grid.  I’ll be adding many more white squares, the blue and teal, and much more this week.  This is fun!
