I am excited to announce that I will be teaching at AQS QuiltWeek in Daytona FL held February 27–March 2, 2019.  AQS Members registration start Oc. 23, 2018 and registration for the general public starts Nov. 7, 2018     Click HERE for registration information.

My AQS QuiltWeek Workshops

Traditional,  contemporary and modern quilters who attend my workshops say that they have loads of fun making these projects.   My workshops are a ‘no judgement/stress-free zone’.

You’ll walk away with a solid start on your project and confidence to quickly complete it at home.  In addition, every workshop attendee will receive:

  • Individualized attention–including help with fabric placement
  • Full color pattern with options for customizing your quilt
  • Easy to follow piecing instructions during the workshop
  • Practice using improvisational cutting and piecing techniques–it’s improvisation with a plan!
  • Handout on Modern Quilt Design Principles — resources and tips
  • Quilt Planning Sheet to take home and use for future projects

My workshops are suitable for confident beginners and provides challenges for intermediate and advanced quilters as well.

For a quick introduction…..watch here!

Fractured Disappearing 9 Patch Workshop

The ‘Disappearing 9 Patch’ has become a standard block for modern quilts but we will take it a few steps further.

First, everyone will make several “base” 9 patch blocks at home.  Class includes step-by-step instructions for several improvisational cutting and piecing techniques to completely ‘fracture’ each of the blocks. The results will be unique and fun blocks that are easy to piece but look complex.  This pattern is from my book, Madly Modern Quilts, available from local quilt shops and online.

MidCentury Modern Curve Quilt Workshop

This is one of my most popular workshops. It’s a modern variation of the drunkard’s path traditional block, pieced without templates or matching.  (I’ll be publishing a full pattern late this year so be sure to follow my blog for updates.)

MidCentury Modern Curve Quilt #2

The freehand cut curves make the quilt look very improvisational.  Curved blocks are cut and pieced with NO TEMPLATES and NO PINNING!

You will practice several techniques for creating unique improvisational blocks. Class includes detailed instruction for cutting and piecing freehand curve blocks.  Then, you will learn key design principles for fracturing these base blocks to create a block with both straight and curved lines. Finally, you will make improvisationally pieced fabric from the ‘leftovers’ to insert into other blocks.

Participants will develop confidence freehand cutting and piecing gentle curves, combining prints and solid fabrics, alternate grid layouts and incorporating negative space.

Stash Buster Improv Quilt Workshop

Scrappy Improv Stash Buster–one of the optional layouts

What to do with that ever growing pile of scraps and ‘orphan blocks’ left over from other projects?   How about those ‘test blocks’ that weren’t quite perfect enough to go into your finished quilt?  You paid a lot of money for the fabric—why not make those blocks into a quilt!

Well, this class is an easy answer to the stash busting & orphan block problem. We will start with a fast and easy approach and rapidly create improvisationally pieced blocks. You’ll leave with a couple of approaches for making improvisational blocks that will keep you from worrying about matching everything up.  To make it even more fun, you’ll have a chance to trade some  fabric with some new friends to make your blocks even more random!

Easy Peasy Flamingo Mini Quilt Workshop

Madly Modern Flamingo MiniQuilt–featuring a tropical flamingo print and coordinating solids and stripes.

Who doesn’t love a project that can be finished in just a few hours? With a little bit of at-home preparation, you will create your mini quilt in a fast paced workshop!  This project is perfect for showcasing a special print–you will fussy cut one square that features a motif from that special fabric. Along the way, I will teach you easy-peasey improvisational piecing techniques that help you make amazingly complex looking blocks.
