Slow Curves and Strips: Modern Quilt Workshop

Friday, June 3, 2016 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

In this workshop, you will use a wide variety of prints and batiks to create a unique modern quilt or wall hanging.  This takes the ‘scrappy look’ and uses it in a more sophisticated modern setting.

At home, you will piece long rail fence blocks– improvisationally cut and piece skinny strips of multiple fabrics.  In class, we will practice cutting and sewing ‘slow curves’ blocks—gentle curves cut with a rotary cutter and pieced using a straight stitch.  The curved blocks and the rail fence blocks are combined to make interesting rectangular blocks that are laid out in a planned improvisational design the instructor will provide.

Finished project measures lap quilt size–I’ll provide several options for ‘upsizing’ or downsizing.

 

 

Madly Modern Mini Quilt

Sunday, July 24th, 2016 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Nine Patch quilts are so fundamental…and they can be modernized in lots of fun ways.  The ‘Disappearing 9 Patch’ has become a standard block for modern quilts but we will take it a few steps further.

At home, you will prepare a very large 9 Patch block.  Then, in class, I will provide instructions for several improvisational cutting and piecing techniques to completely ‘fracture’ the block to create a new mini 9 Patch quilt.  It’s quite a bit of fun to see how different each finished block will look!

This is a fun project that will use a color palette based around a focus bold print, a background fabric and coordinating prints and solids (or near solids or ombres).   Finished project measures approximate 24 by 24 inches.
